Congresswoman Summer Lee Celebrates Perfect 100% Score on League of Conservation Voters National Environmental Scorecard

(Pittsburgh, PA) Today, Congresswoman Summer Lee is honored to announce her perfect 100% score on the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) 2023 National Environmental Scorecard, a testament to her record delivering on environmental justice, climate action, and a sustainable future for every member of every community regardless of their zip code. Lee’s 100% score reflects the Congresswoman’s dedicated efforts over the past year to deliver historic climate and environmental justice investments, advance clean energy solutions, and ensure the creation of good-paying union jobs.

In response to this recognition, Congresswoman Lee stated, “I am deeply honored to receive a perfect score from the LCV for my work on environmental advocacy This achievement is not mine alone but belongs to our community and the many activists, scientists, and policymakers who have fought tirelessly alongside me for a greener, more equitable world. Our collective efforts to combat the climate crisis and secure environmental justice underscore our belief that every person has a right to clean air and water. These are not privileges but basic necessities for health, dignity, and life itself. Our work to make our democracy more accessible and equitable is intertwined with our fight for environmental justice, as we seek to ensure that all communities, especially those historically marginalized, have a say in the decisions that affect their environment and their lives. Together, we have made significant strides, but our journey is far from over. We must continue to push for policies that not only address the urgent challenge of climate change but also ensure a just transition to a clean energy economy that benefits all Americans, upholds our right to a healthy environment, and protects our planet for future generations.”

Congresswoman Summer Lee has been at the forefront of environmental advocacy, demonstrating her commitment to a sustainable future and public health through key legislative actions:

Delivering Significant Funding for Environmental Initiatives: Congresswoman Lee played a pivotal role in securing just over $900 million in funding aimed at bolstering the clean energy sector and creating thousands of good paying union jobs in the process. This substantial investment is also directed towards removing lead from water and schools, enhancing flood protection measures, and addressing air pollution and the climate crisis, showcasing her dedication to both environmental sustainability and public health.

Legislation on Abandoned Wells: Congresswoman Lee introduced and passed through the Science Space and Technology Committee on a unanimous bipartisan basis the Abandoned Well Remediation Research and Development Act. The crucial legislation would target the abandoned wells, which are known sources of air and water pollution in Westmoreland and Allegheny County. Lee’s efforts led to the unanimous passage of this legislation through committee, marking a significant step towards mitigating environmental hazards and protecting community health.

Amendment to Protect Children’s Health: Understanding the critical importance of clean water for our youngest and most vulnerable, Congresswoman Lee successfully passed an amendment to increase funding for the testing and remediation of lead contamination in drinking water at schools and child care facilities. This move highlights her commitment to safeguarding children’s health from the harmful effects of lead exposure and disinvestment.

The LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard is a benchmark for evaluating the environmental commitment of U.S. lawmakers. Receiving a perfect score is a clear indication of Congresswoman Lee’s leadership and dedication to policies that protect our planet for future generations. Her efforts last year were instrumental in promoting legislation that not only addresses the urgent challenge of climate change but also ensures a just transition to a clean energy economy that benefits all Americans.

Congresswoman Lee is committed to continuing her work to safeguard our environment, strengthen our democracy, and uplift our communities. She will use this recognition to further her advocacy for comprehensive climate solutions and environmental justice, ensuring that every individual has access to clean air, clean water, and a livable future.
