Office Also Announces New Communications Director and Senior Advisor

Today Summer Lee was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives to serve Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District in the 118th Congress. Representative Lee made history as the first Black woman ever elected to Congress from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the first Democratic woman and the first Black member to represent Allegheny County and Pittsburgh in Congress. Representative Lee succeeds Congressman Mike Doyle. 

Representative Summer Lee said: “I’m here because the people of Southwestern Pennsylvania and Pittsburgh said they wanted a Representative in Congress who will stand up for working folks, for healthcare for all, for clean air and water, and affordable housing. I’m here because the region wants a Representative who has lived the same struggles that so many folks in our district have, and I want better for all of us. Serving in Congress is an incredible honor and I promise to always stand for the people with every decision and every vote I take.”

Representative Lee previously served two terms in the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives. She won the election on November 8, 2022,  over Republican Mike Doyle (no relation to the retiring Congressman) by 12 percent, 56 – 44. 

Today the office also announced that Emilia Rowland will serve as Communications Director and Senior Advisor for the Congresswoman. She previously served as Press Secretary and Senior Spokesperson for Senator John Fetterman’s Senate Campaign after serving as Communications Director and Policy Advisor for Congressman Sean Casten (IL-06), during which time she also led communications strategy for the Congressional Workers Union.
