Rep. Summer Lee Introduces Resolution Honoring Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Founders Day and 112 Years of Sisterhood
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA) introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives recognizing the Founders Day of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and 112 years of sisterhood. Founded on January 13, 1913, at Howard University by 22 visionary college women, Delta Sigma Theta has grown to over 1,050 chapters and 350,000 members worldwide, continuing to exemplify excellence, sisterhood, and service.
Rep. Lee spoke on the importance of honoring Delta Sigma Theta’s legacy and the indelible impact the organization has made in advocating for social justice, educational access, and global humanitarian efforts.
“This resolution is a tribute to the extraordinary contributions of Delta Sigma Theta and its unwavering commitment to uplift and serve Black communities and beyond,” said Rep. Lee. “From the legacy of our 22 Founders to the countless lives touched by their programs, Delta women have been champions for justice, equity, and opportunity for over a century. I am honored to introduce this resolution recognizing their enduring impact.”
The resolution celebrates Delta Sigma Theta’s dedication to addressing critical issues through its Five-Point Programmatic Thrust, which focuses on economic development, educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, and political awareness and involvement. The organization has spearheaded groundbreaking initiatives, including the establishment of the Mary Help of the Sick Mission Hospital in Kenya and its designation as a special consultative non-governmental organization to the United Nations.
