Rep. Summer Lee Statement on House Passage of Harmful GOP Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. – MAY 22, 2025 — Today, Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12) issued the following statement on the House passage of the harmful Republican budget that would cut billions from Medicaid, SNAP, and other lifesaving programs.
“Today, House Republicans passed a dangerous reconciliation package that gives trillions in tax breaks to billionaires and corporate profiteers at the expense of Western Pennsylvania and working families across the country.
“This package was negotiated behind closed doors and pushed through committees in the dead of night, deliberately to mask the scale of harm Republicans are inflicting on everyday people. This supposed ‘beautiful bill’ includes slashing $736 billion from Medicaid–the single largest cut in the program’s history–which would rip health care away from 7.6 million children, seniors, and people with disabilities. It kicks millions off SNAP, undercuts access to school meals for the kids who need them most, and makes attending college even less affordable—worsening the student debt crisis and so much more. And at a time when our communities are being devastated by floods, fires, and other extreme weather events, Republicans are dismantling the very programs that strengthen housing resilience and rescinding investments that confront the climate crisis. This bill reaches into nearly every part of daily life for working people, and yet, does little to address the cost-of-living crisis hammering our communities.
“I voted no. There’s nothing beautiful about a bill that forces families to choose between taking their kids to the doctor or feeding them. And a bill that enshrines Republicans’ accountability to the wealthy rather than the American people is undemocratic and unjust. We will continue organizing, pushing, and holding every policymaker accountable until the needs of working people are prioritized over profits.”
Congresswoman Summer Lee serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Since taking office in January 2023, she has delivered historic levels of federal investment totaling over $2.4 Billion brought back to Western PA, including over $580 million for infrastructure, over $110 million for affordable transit, over $500 million to keep clean energy manufacturing at home in Pennsylvania, and over $55 million on clean energy efforts in and around schools to help keep our kids and communities safe. These investments will help improve Western Pennsylvania’s infrastructure and transit, ensure cleaner air and drinking water, lower housing costs, fund research institutions, fuel clean manufacturing, fund STEM innovation and entrepreneurship, boost workforce development, and create thousands of good paying union jobs. Lee and her team have also delivered casework and constituent services to over 3,000 constituents with issues ranging from helping our seniors and disabled community access Medicare and social security to helping folks secure housing and helping families with immigration support and passports.
