Summer Lee sworn in as first Black woman elected to Congress from PA; Ceremony held in Pittsburgh (WPXI)

PITTSBURGH — U.S. Congresswoman Summer Lee held a ceremonial swearing-in in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The ceremony was held at the Kelly Strayhorn Theatre in East Liberty to celebrate Lee making history as the first Black woman from Pennsylvania to be elected to Congress.

She is also the first Democratic woman and the first Black person to represent Allegheny County and Pittsburgh in Congress.

“When I think about what it means to run for office, the sacrifices that I make are the sacrifices that our community makes,” said Lee. “I pledge to fight for you. I pledge to fight for a better world.”

About 350 people were in attendance, including Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey.

Lee was also joined by her campaign staff and family.

“Thank you all so much for your faith in me,” said Lee.
