Congresswoman Summer Lee Announces $398.6 Million Investment in Green Battery Storage Technology
Pittsburgh, PA — Today, Congresswoman Summer Lee (PA-12) announced that the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Program Office (LPO) issued a conditional commitment of $398,600,000 to finance up to 80% of Eos Energy Enterprises Project AMAZE – American Made Zinc Energy. Project AMAZE is a $500 million expansion program designed to scale annual production to meet the demand for Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES). This investment will lead to over 1,000 green jobs in the Monongahela (Mon) Valley region, 50 union construction jobs, and a plan to achieve 100% U.S-sourced material by 2026.
Lee said, “I am thrilled to announce $398.6M in funding to bring green jobs to the Mon Valley. Our region can be a leader in this new, green economy and projects like AMAZE will make that a reality. This investment and these jobs are just the start. I will fight every day to make sure our region is not left behind in this transition to a new economy. I will continue to work with Eos and other regional partners to ensure that workers in our region will continue to manufacture what the world needs, as we always have. I applaud the EOS team for reaching this amazing milestone, and I thank the Biden Administration for their investment.”
Background:
Since taking office, Congresswoman Lee and the team have met with DOE leadership on a regular basis to support EOS in this application process. We intend to continue these efforts of coordination and support throughout implementation, and EOS and Congresswoman Lee’s team are already discussing additional federal funding opportunities.
Highlights:
- Project AMAZE — American Made Zinc Energy, is a $500 million expansion program designed to scale annual production to 8 GWh storage capacity by 2026 to meet the demand for Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES).
- The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Loan Programs Office (LPO) has issued an up to $398.6 million conditional commitment for a loan guarantee, which, if the loan is finalized, is expected to fund 80% of the expansion in Pennsylvania.
- Eos’ American workforce, over 300 strong, is expected to grow to nearly one thousand green-collar careers upon the successful completion of Project AMAZE in 2026 — spurring economic growth in the Monongahela (Mon) Valley region and honoring a local history of industrial manufacturing that dates back to the founding of Westinghouse.
- Project AMAZE would expand U.S. supply chain, which Eos believes features domestic sourcing sufficient to qualify for the Domestic Content Bonus awarded by the IRA’s Investment Tax Credit (ITC). Eos aims to move to 100% U.S-sourced material by 2026.
- Eos recently announced a partnership with Wisconsin-based ACRO Automation Systems to design, develop, and implement its first state-of-the-art high-output manufacturing line.
- Eos will be the first American battery manufacturer to benefit from the Title 17 “Clean Energy Financing Program” in the “Innovative Energy” category.
