WHAT: In June 2022, Salem’s Market Centre Ave LLC in Pittsburgh, Pa., received a grant of $200,000 through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Health Food Financing Initiative with the federal support of Rep. Summer Lee, PA-12. SMCA operates a full-service Halal grocery store that has served the Pittsburgh region for over 40 years. With Support from HFFI, Salem’s was able to renovate a vacant former Shop ‘N Save in the historic Hill District neighborhood. This project reactivated a former grocery store that has been vacant since it went out of business in 2019.
On Monday, Congresswoman Lee, USDA Senior Advisor for Rural Engagement Cindy Axne, USDA State Director for Rural Development Bob Morgan, and other local officials will tour the grocery store and host a press conference alongside Abdullah Salem, owner of Salem’s Market.
