Rep. Lee Statement on Certifying the Election and Marking 4 Years Since January 6th Insurrection

Today marks four years since the violent attack on our Capitol, an insurrection spurred by Donald Trump and fueled by election denial. That day, a mob sought to overturn the will of the people, subvert our democracy, and terrorize anyone standing in their way.

While my colleagues and I remained steadfast in voting to uphold the results of free and fair elections, Donald Trump—now running to regain power—has pledged to pardon those responsible for the insurrection. This is the same man who spent his presidency rewarding loyalty to billionaires and cronies while threatening those who dared to stand for truth.

January 6 is a reminder of the stark choice before us: to fight for a democracy that protects every community, including Black and brown communities that have borne the brunt of political violence and systemic injustice—or to allow a sexual offender and failed billionaire to rewrite the rules to protect only his power and privilege.

The fight for democracy is not abstract. It’s about ensuring that everyone—no matter their race, zip code, or income—has a voice in our nation’s future. It’s about rejecting leaders who undermine democratic principles and working every day to deliver for the people, not the powerful.

Today, we honor the Capitol officers who put their lives on the line that day. We recommit ourselves to the democratic values that make our country resilient and renew our promise to protect our communities from the forces of hate and tyranny.
