Community Safety Caucus
As Members of the Community Safety Caucus, we are committed to embracing a multidisciplinary public health approach to safety that stops violence and harm before they happen while offering caring, equitable responses to behavioral health and other crises.
We know that our nation’s approach to public safety is failing children, families, and communities across the country, but innovative “community safety” models have helped drive extraordinary increases in public safety. “Community safety” is a movement recognizing that to truly be safe, we must not only be free of violence in the streets, but also free of violence in our homes, free of toxic air and inaccessible healthcare, and free of systemic discrimination in our schools and neighborhoods. “Community safety” acknowledges that genuine safety comes from holistic investments into people and communities that break, rather than perpetuate, cycles of harm.
By centering “community safety” as our mission, this Caucus will be a vehicle for imagining evidence-based, transformative models of public safety that prevent violence and harm, meet crises with care, and help every community thrive. We will leverage legislative and appropriations advocacy, research, and educational programming to champion initiatives that finally deliver what Americans crave: genuine safety and wellbeing for all people.
