Rep. Summer Lee Condemns Attacks on Democracy on Fifth Anniversary of January 6 Insurrection
WASHINGTON, D.C. – JANUARY 6, 2026 — Today, Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12) released the following statement marking the fifth anniversary of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol:
“Five years ago, the American people watched in horror as violent insurrectionists overtook our nation’s Capitol. This white supremacist-fueled assault was an attack on Black and brown voters, working people, and the everyday people who fought to make their voices heard in a historic election. It put the lives of Capitol workers, staff, police officers, and Members of Congress at risk, and continues to pose an existential threat to our democracy.
“Rather than lower costs, make housing affordable, protect healthcare, or deliver real relief to working families, Trump chose to use his first act in office to pardon or grant clemency to every person convicted for their role in the insurrection. And today, we are seeing the consequences play out as this administration grows more reckless and more brazen in its abuse of power. As we mark this solemn anniversary, we must recommit ourselves to defending democracy by protecting voting rights, rejecting the authoritarian power grabs we are witnessing in real time, and ensuring our government answers only to the people, not the powerful.”
Congresswoman Summer Lee serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Education and Workforce. Since taking office in January 2023, she has delivered historic levels of federal investment totaling over $2.4 Billion brought back to Western PA, including over $580 million for infrastructure, over $110 million for affordable transit, over $500 million to keep clean energy manufacturing at home in Pennsylvania, and over $55 million on clean energy efforts in and around schools to help keep our kids and communities safe. These investments will help improve Western Pennsylvania’s infrastructure and transit, ensure cleaner air and drinking water, lower housing costs, fund research institutions, fuel clean manufacturing, fund STEM innovation and entrepreneurship, boost workforce development, and create thousands of good paying union jobs. Lee and her team have also delivered casework and constituent services to over 3,000 constituents with issues ranging from helping our seniors and disabled community access Medicare and social security to helping folks secure housing and helping families with immigration support and passports.
