Rep. Summer Lee Releases Statement on U.S. Steel’s Acquisition by Nippon Steel

June 18, 2025

PITTSBURGH, PA– JUNE 18, 2025 — Today, Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12) issued the following statement on the finalized acquisition of U.S. Steel by Nippon Steel:

“Western Pennsylvania enters a new chapter today with the sale of U.S. Steel to Nippon Steel. This is a moment of immense consequence—not just for corporate shareholders, but for the generations of workers and families in Western Pennsylvania who built this industry and whose futures hang in the balance.

“Any deal of this magnitude must be judged not by press releases or promises, but by outcomes. This deal could mean so much for our region. However, our communities have seen far too many lofty commitments fade after the cameras leave. We know the cost of broken promises and we won’t and we can’t let that cycle repeat.

“This deal was sold to the public with assurances of job security, investment, and growth. Now the real work begins: holding Nippon Steel accountable to every commitment made to workers and to our region. That means oversight, real transparency, and a focus on protecting the rights, benefits, and livelihoods of the steelworkers whose labor and sacrifice built this industry from the ground up–and on ensuring a cleaner environment for the frontline communities that have long borne the brunt of toxic pollution.

“We welcome investment—but we demand justice, equity, and a future where working families aren’t just considered, but prioritized. A future where no community is treated like a sacrifice zone and every neighborhood has clean air and clean water.

“The people of Pittsburgh and the Mon Valley built U.S. Steel. We will not let their contributions be erased, and we will not rest until every promise made to our communities is fulfilled.”
