Rep. Summer Lee Statement on Passage of Trump’s Devastating Reconciliation Bill

July 3, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – JULY 03, 2025 — Today, Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12) issued the following statement on the passage of Trump and Republicans’ reconciliation bill–the so-called “big-beautiful bill”-that will devastate families and communities across the country:

“Today’s passage of Trump and Republicans’ so-called big, beautiful bill is nothing short of devastating for everyday, working-class people who will have to live with its consequences, while billionaires and corporate profiteers are handed tax breaks.

“There is nothing beautiful about telling a grandmother that she’ll be forced out of her nursing home because over $1 trillion will be cut from Medicaid – the single largest cut in the program’s history – and she is one of the 17 million people who will lose their healthcare. There is nothing beautiful about a parent skipping meals so their kids can eat because Republicans decided to gut $200 billion in food assistance at a time when groceries are already breaking people’s budgets. There is nothing beautiful about a college student dropping out because this bill makes their tuition even more unaffordable. And there is absolutely nothing beautiful about a child having worse asthma attacks or our neighborhoods flooding or thousands of people losing their jobs because this bill reverses investments in clean energy tax credits and programs that reduce pollution and make our communities more resilient while oil and gas barons continue raking in billions.

“I voted no. This bill wasn’t crafted with care for our communities. It was written by people who aren’t worried about whether they can afford a doctor’s visit, never once worried if their social security check would cover rent and medicine, and never once worried about how they’re going to pay their electric bill during a brutal heat wave—all while siding with the very polluters driving the crisis.

“Despite what Trump and Republicans say, passing this disastrous and cruel bill is not putting 'Americans first.' They are betraying the everyday person and putting their billionaire donors first. Plain and simple. This is a deliberate choice to make life harder for working families here in Western Pennsylvania and across the country, to strip dignity from our seniors, to push children and parents deeper into poverty and hunger. I will continue doing everything in my power to mitigate the harm and fight back against this fascist regime.“

Congresswoman Summer Lee serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Committee on Education and the Workforce. Since taking office in January 2023, she has delivered historic levels of federal investment totaling over $2.4 Billion brought back to Western PA, including over $580 million for infrastructure, over $110 million for affordable transit, over $500 million to keep clean energy manufacturing at home in Pennsylvania, and over $55 million on clean energy efforts in and around schools to help keep our kids and communities safe. These investments will help improve Western Pennsylvania’s infrastructure and transit, ensure cleaner air and drinking water, lower housing costs, fund research institutions, fuel clean manufacturing, fund STEM innovation and entrepreneurship, boost workforce development, and create thousands of good paying union jobs. Lee and her team have also delivered casework and constituent services to over 3,000 constituents with issues ranging from helping our seniors and disabled community access Medicare and social security to helping folks secure housing and helping families with immigration support and passports.
