Reps. Summer Lee and Chris Deluzio Conduct Unannounced Oversight Visit Inside Moshannon Valley ICE Detention Center
PHILIPSBURG, PA – MAY 28, 2026 — Today, Congresswoman Summer L. Lee (PA-12) and Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) conducted an unannounced oversight visit to the Moshannon Valley Processing Center and Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) facility in Clearfield County, PA. After a 30-minute wait, the two members of Congress were granted entry and remained inside the facility for approximately two hours. Their staff, including translators, were not allowed to enter. This is the first unannounced visit by Members of Congress inside the Moshannon Valley detention center during the second Trump Administration.
Recent reporting has raised major concerns about the conditions of what is happening in Moshannon. There were two recorded deaths in the facility in the last year, a recent hunger strike, reporting of inadequate medical care and neglect, and more.
Following the visit, the lawmakers addressed the press and shared what they saw and learned during their oversight visit. A recap can be found here. Additional photos and remarks to the press can be found here.
Their findings include the following:
- The vast majority of people being detained in Moshannon are considered “low-security,” meaning they have not been accused of serious, violent crimes or engaged in similar conduct while detained.
- Detained women in the facility have concerns about food and medical care, including care for pregnant women.
- Conversations with detained people were limited because ICE staff denied entry to congressional staff who could provide translation services, limiting the breadth of conversations possible between the Congressmembers and the detained people.
- There were major differences between what Moshannon leadership told the members of Congress, and the stories that detained people shared with them during the visit, especially about medical care, food quality, and ability to stay updated on their legal cases.
Rep. Lee previously attempted to conduct a lawful oversight visit in August 2025 but was denied entry. In February, Rep. Lee sent a formal congressional inquiry to ICE demanding answers regarding the detention of Maklim Gomez Escalante, an asylum seeker and constituent living in Brentwood, Pennsylvania. She has continued to call for Moshannon’s closure.
